In the 1820's this was the royal hunting ground of the famous Zulu King, Shaka. Then came other great hunters and due to the uncontrolled slaughter of the wildlife in an attempt to eradicate the Tsetse fly, some of the world's oldest game reserves were proclaimed. This served as a sanctuary to breed up the animal populations in the region and saved the White Rhino from extinction. This area consistently produces some of the world's best Nyala trophies.
World record Nyala, Red Duiker and Suni have been taken from our concessions. While in Zululand, we operate from our base camp, known as "OPPIE KOPPIE" situated on the outskirts of Pongola town. These secluded chalets with en-suite bathrooms and Jacuzzil provide you with all the home comforts you require.
Magudu Game Reserve, Pongola - This game reserve forms part of an important conservation corridor between the Zululand Rhino Reserve and the Pongola Game Reserve. Centrally situated between a number of "Big 5" game reserves, this reserve is home to White Rhino, Elephant, Buffalo and an extraordinarily high density of Leopard compared to any other reserve in Africa. Some of the other 25 odd species found on the reserve, range from the huge Giraffes, to Nyala, Kudu, Waterbuck, Zebra, Wildebeest, Warthog, Impala, Bushbuck, Common and Mountain Reedbuck, to the diminutive Red Duiker.
The Bushcamp comprises of 4 twin bedded en-suite units, pool, braai area and a self contained kitchen where our chef prepares some of Africa's favourite cuisines. These facilities can also be used as a springboard to visit the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve, Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park, Tembe Elephant Park, visit the Indian Ocean at Sodwana Bay and Pongolapoort Dam were you can catch Tiger Fish.
Richards Bay-Approximately 2 hours drive from camp.
Thatch game lodges and East African safari tents.
The winter nights are cool (45-60 F / 7-15 C) and the days are usually lovely and warm (65-80 F / 18-27 C). The odd cold front at this time of the year can cause light rain and windy conditions.
